If accidents happen Empty
PostSubject: If accidents happen   If accidents happen EmptyMon Aug 24, 2009 10:43 am

Hi all,
Just having a think after the accidents yesterday on the caves ride. The positive in all of this is that the guys from NSWR (Ed, Kris and the other) handled a very bad situation very well. Some people had very good first aid kits, Liam was obviously a trained first aider. Telstra was the only option for reception out that far. Someone had a number for a tow truck etc. All in all an awesome effort without which could have made a bad situation tragic.

Anyway got me thinking what would happen if we had an accident on our rides. affraid

Would like to hear suggestions what others think around this. Does anyone have a first aid certificate. Does anyone carry any gear with them? What phone carriers do people use (I'm with 3 which roams on Telstra so had some reception but
I hope it never happens but if it does I would feel more comfortable knowing we knew what to do......... Rolling Eyes

Thoughts very welcome

Stew, sorry to hear about the bikes going down ( did this happen just after our stop at Oberon? )
I always carry a small first aid kit in my saddlebags!
Guess I'd better do that first aid course I'm always promised myself I'd do.
The fun sure stops when someone gets hurt or injured.
I personally wish a speedy recovery to all

Sounds like we are in good hands if we have Ed and others of experience along on the rides.

Only thing I am really concerned about in a crash is that the person helping really knows that they are doing in regards dealing with a motorcycle rider specifically. Have heard plenty of opinions in regards helmets and necks and how things are supposed to be handled and sometimes they conflict.

Yeah Al about 10ks after our stop at Oberon. Not sure what happened over lunch but people lost concentration after it.
As far as I know Cam you should leave helmet on and not try and remove it.
Then again I'm no expert but am thinking it might not be a bad idea to do a course anyway as you just never know.

On the phone side of things, in an emergency you can also try to dial 112 or 000 from your mobile regardless of whether your provider has coverage or not. You should be able to connect to another network for emergency calls I believe.

First Aid info from the Motorcycle Council of NSW website,

First Aid Factsheet - http://www.mccofnsw.org.au/a/84.html

First Aid Course for Motorcyclists - http://www.mccofnsw.org.au/a/85.html

Sorry to hear about the accident. I wish the people involved make a speedy recovery.

I used to do a lot of 4WD-ing and I always had my first aid kit with me. But I never thought about it.

I did a first aid course about 5 years ago, but realistically I am not confident enough when it comes down to that kind of situation.

What Stew says about the helmet was right. Also check surrounding and make sure there is no hazard for ourselves before taking any kind of action to help.

If someone breaks bones, do not touch or move, call 000 ASAP.

We also can check if the person is breathing by checking the pulse. We can always talk to the person and see if he/she is conscious.

I will bring my first aid kit on future rides.

As I work in heavy industry, my employer encourages all employees to undertake formal safety training. I have a Senior First Aid Certificate which is renewed each three years. The company pays the trainer and pays me to attend so I make sure to take the opportunity. There are valuable skills to be learnt. The knowledge can be applied across all aspects of your life. Kids burning themselves with boiling water, neighbour electrocuting himself, brother has a heart attack .......... the opportunites to help someone can be all around you. I once assisted another guy to give EAR and CPR to an elderly gentleman who collapsed in a shopping centre. We kept him going until the ambo's arrived and he survived. (we later had afternoon tea with him and his wife so they could say thanks for our help).

If you have the time and the $$ to do the course then be sure to do it. You never know when ...............
