PostSubject: 2010 Snowy Ride   Wed Jul 28, 2010 5:12 pm

The Snowy Ride is a motorcycle event run annually in the Alpine Region of NSW with the aim of involving motorcycle riders from all over Australia to raise money for Childhood Cancer Research. Over 3,000 riders participated last year, so early booking of accommodation is important. It is also an opportunity for riders to enjoy a weekend away with their friends and family and to ride some of Australia’s best and most picturesque roads.

The first Snowy Ride was launched in 2001 as a request from Steven Walter, a young man who lost his fight against cancer. Steve loved motorcycle riding and asked that a charity motorcycle ride be organised to raise funds for cancer research and cancer care, “So that one day no other kid will have to go through what I’ve been through”.

The Snowy Ride web site www.snowyride.com.au will keep riders updated with the latest news and what is happening with the ride. Registrations are now being accepted online and you will be able to order merchandise in due course.

The date for this year's Snowy Ride is Saturday 6th November 2010. A concert is usually held on the Friday night (details to be confirmed).

Accommodation links can be found on the website, along with pictures from previous years.

A general overview of the weekend is:

Riders usually start arriving in Thredbo village on the Friday and do their own thing. On the Friday a Snowy Ride registration tent is usually assembled in Cooma where late registrants can collect their park entry stickers and merchandise etc.

A concert (you need to buy tickets) is usually held in the Thredbo Alpine Hotel that night.

On the Saturday, Honda have a large number of motorbikes that you are able to test ride. Bookings required so get out of bed early and get down to the Honda tent and put your name down.

There is no real agenda on Saturday. Everyone either in groups of friends etc or by themselves spend it riding the wonderful roads that can be found in the region. Popular ones include Thredbo to Khancoban, Cooma, Charlotte's Pass, Perisher valley etc. Another good one is to Dalgety pub for lunch, where hundreds of bikes gather which makes for a pretty good atmosphere.

About 4:00 on the Saturday, there is a group gathering of riders near the entrance to the park (I'm talking about 1,500 + bikes). Everybody rides to Thredbo Village in convoy which is truly impressive. After arriving in the village, everybody meets for a speech from the Snowy Ride organisers. By buying your Snowy Ride ticket, you have a chance of winning a new Honda motorbike. In past years that has been a Goldwing worth $40,000. There is usually a raffle for another bike as well.

Usually, there is a public concert in the public areas adjacent to the Thredbo Alpine Hotel that night.

On the Sunday, there is no organised agenda. A lot of people start riding home, but it's another opportunity to ride the mountains again.

There is a petrol station at the bottom of the village. There is only one.

Accommodation needs to be booked early. Some choices that I am familiar with include:

This will be my 4th and yes I am booked in at The Silver Brumby for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

We'll depart on Friday morning from Maccas Heathcote:

The Route

After meeting up with any riders from Wollongong at Albion Park:

Princes Highway, Batemans Bay, Sapphire Coast Hwy to Bega (via Bermagui).

Bega to Cooma, via Brown Mountain and onto Jindabyne/Thredbo.

Sounds like you would depart Saturday, but hope you can tag along for the ride down.

Roddy

I have spoken with Emma at The Silver Brumby. They have one room left. It's a 3 bedder, but she will let it out for 2 people. I think the rate is $80.00 pp per night. If you or anyone else are interested, contact Emma at:

I'll keep an eye out for you Ed. I am riding from Newcastle with about 7 bikes. We have private accomodation organised up at Perisher Valley. We are leaving Thursday to have a circuitous trip to be in Cooma by noon on Friday. I have been elected ride leader for the trip down so I have some work to do to put a ride plan together. General consensus is we will travel west and head down from that direction. This will be my fourth Snowy Ride and (despite the behaviour of some riders) I really enjoy the community nature of the weekend.

I hope I get the opportunity to say "hi" somewhere on the day.

Ian

This is our route.

Hint: You will have recd a card for a raffle and rec a stamp at various check points on the Saturday. Bugger that. Just take the card to the Snowy Ride tent at the car park near the Thredbo Alpine Hotel. They will give you all the stamp impressions and accept your raffle entry. At least they have done in all prev years. Enjoy.

I am staying at the Silver Brumby which is above Thredbo Village. My number is 0435 143 273, although mobile coverage is not that good in the region.

Ian, how was your ride. Sorry we didn't catch up. I heard a few bikes went down with one rider airlifted out. As good as the roads are to ride, they should be treated with the respect they deserve. I led the Khancoban, Adaminaby, Berridale then Thredbo loop on Saturday and Sunday with different groups.

I didn't get to Charlottes Pass, but others did. As can be seen from these pictures, fun was had by all. Far more snow than prev years.

Excellent pictures as always Ed !! Very Happy As usual, I did not even take a camera Embarassed
We travelled on Thursday from Newcastle via Wisemans Ferry, Sackville Ferry, Windsor, Bells LOR to Lithgow for lunch. Showers all the way but no major rain to speak of. The roads were very wet in places so we treated all corners with considerable respect! After lunch we headed via Bathurst for a lap of Mt Panorama. Given the state of the weather we stayed on the highway down through Cowra and Young, eventually making our overnight stop at the Central Hotel in Cootamundra.
On Friday (in much more pleasant weather) we headed across to Gundagai and then travelled the beautiful roads down through Tumut with a stop at Talbingo for morning tea. Lunch at Adaminaby followed, then into Cooma for fuel and merchandise purchases. Finally, up to Perisher Valley for our overnight stay.
On Saturday we trecked up the hill to Charlottes Pass for morning coffee, then back to breakfast at the Jindabyne checkpoint, then out to Dalgety for lunch, a circuitous route to Berridale and then back to Thredbo for the rain sodden presentation.
Home on Sunday via Goulburn, Oberon, Windsor, Castle Hill and the F3. Overall for the weekend I clocked up 1999 klms. No incidents or even near misses for us, but we did see three bike accidents whilst out and about on Saturday.
The way some people ride frightens (and annoys) me at times.
Overall, another great weekend with mates! I am sorry our paths didn't cross Ed. Maybe next time ! Smile

What a great route. Good effort. I didn't do CP, the rest of our group did and I heard about the accidents up that way. Came across one myself. A bike was resting against a cliff wall with the front wheel in the radiator. No respect for the complexity of the roads I say.
