MEDIA RELEASE FROM THE MOTORCYCLE COUNCIL OF NSW

SYDNEY HARBOUR BRIDGE OPEN FOR RIDERS

15TH JANUARY 2012

The Motorcycle Council of NSW (MCC of NSW) is reminding all motorcyclists and scooter riders that the Sydney Harbour Bridge will remain open to bus lane traffic throughout January’s weekend closures. Motorcycles and scooters are qualified to use bus lanes in NSW.

Justin Dorward, Publicity Chair, MCC of NSW (and NSW Rider Delegate) says “Motorcycles and scooters have numerous advantages in the urban landscape, such as escaping traffic by using bus lanes. The Sydney Harbour Bridge is not closed to riders during these roadworks.”

Riders should be aware of increased bus numbers catering for public transport needs at this time.
The summer holiday season sees an influx of motorcyclists take to Sydney and NSW roads. After an unusually cool and wet December, higher numbers of recreational motorcyclists are expected to take to the roads across NSW, taking advantage of the January weather and seasonal holidays.

The MCC of NSW reminds riders to stay safe by utilising Driver Reviver sites across NSW this summer.
“Driver Revivers help save lives by helping the reduce fatigue among motorists by providing a welcoming environment where they can take a break, stretch their legs and enjoy a free cup of tea and biscuits, served by friendly local volunteers,” a Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said.

“Riders should watch out for symptoms of fatigue while riding, which include tired eyes, drowsiness, yawning and loss of concentration. Riders should also avoid traveling during times they would normally be asleep, as this is when the chance of a fatigue related crash is greatest.”

“About 65 Driver Reviver sites are operating across NSW these holidays. Their locations and operating times can be found by visiting www.rms.nsw.gov.au so it’s easy to riders to plan where they will take breaks along their journey.

Driver Reviver is sponsored by Bushells Tea and Arnotts and has been operating since 1986.

Riders should:

- wear appropriate safety gear and be prepared for unexpected / inclement weather
- remain well rested and hydrated and avoid alcohol before riding
